Educational Leaders of today must serve as
Leaders for Student Learning:

They must know academic content v. supplemental
content |

They must know pedagogical techniques |
 |
They must work with teachers to strengthen skills
and competencies |
 |
They must facilitate professional dialogue to
analyze and use data prescriptively to improve instruction |
 |
They must rally students, teachers, parents,
local health and social service agencies, youth development
groups, local businesses, and other community residents and
partners around the common goal of raising student performance |
 |
They must have the leadership skills and k nowledge
to pursue these strategies |
Educational Leaders of today have job descriptions
defined by three roles:

Instructional leadership
that focuses on strengthening teaching and learning, professional
development, data-driven decision-making and accountability.

Community leadership
manifested in a big-picture awareness of the school’s
role in society; shared leadership among educators, community
partners and residents; c lose relations with parents and others;
and advocacy for school capac ity building and resources. |

Visional leadership
that demonstrates energy, commitment, entrepreneurial spirit,
values and conviction that all children will learn at high levels,
as well as inspiring others with this vision both inside and
outside the school building. |
Educational Leaders of today must filter
all traditional functions of his or her leadership position through
the lens of leadership for student learning:
The central guiding principle for preparing leaders for the position
should be refocused on entry standards, recruitment, professional
development, assessment and accountability of educational leaders.
Revamp leadership preparation programs to focus on instructional,
community and visionary leadership roles in improving student learning
in real schools.
To sustain a new breed of leaders for student learning, school
systems must take a fresh approach to professional development,
mentoring, coaching and peer support networks
Call for Action:
Design leadership development that focuses on developing the instructional,
community and visionary roles of educational leaders that incorporates
a strong coaching component that coaches leaders to higher performance
levels personally and organizationally.
